Harare, Zimbabwe – The Government of Zimbabwe has extended condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran following the reported death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, during a deadly attack authorities say involved Israel and the United States of America.

In a formal message of condolence, Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs Minister expressed “profound shock at the passing of the Iranian leader, describing the circumstances of his death as part of a “heinous and unjustified joint attack” on the Islamic Republic on 28 February 2026. The minister said:

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and on my own behalf, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The statement also mourned the deaths of senior political and military leaders as well as hundreds of civilians, including children, who were reportedly killed during the attack. Zimbabwe said it was deeply saddened by the scale of the loss of life and injuries caused by the incident.

Harare further extended wishes for the speedy recovery of those wounded.

Ayatollah Khamenei, who had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for decades, was described in the message as a central figure who guided the Islamic Republic with a deep sense of responsibility and commitment. The statement noted:

“His leadership transcended beyond Iran.”

The condolence message also reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s long-standing diplomatic position on international conflicts, emphasising the need for dialogue and peaceful solutions. The minister added:

“Zimbabwe firmly believes in the peaceful settlement of disputes and wishes for a quick return to peace and tranquillity in Iran and the region.”

Relations between Zimbabwe and Iran have historically been cordial, with the two countries cooperating in areas such as trade, diplomacy and international political solidarity.

Harare concluded the message by urging the Iranian people to take solace in the knowledge that Zimbabwe stands with them during their period of mourning. The statement read:

Please take solace in the knowledge that we mourn with you.
