A lot of people have been asking about Zimbabwean passports, how long they take to process, how much they cost, and what documents you need. Whether you’re in Harare, Johannesburg, or anywhere else, here’s a simple, up-to-date breakdown of the key facts so you can understand the process without stress.
But first, a very fresh update from the Zimbabwe Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa, on passports applied for between 29 January and 5 February 2026:
• These passports are now ready for collection at the Consulate at 20 Ernest Oppenheimer Avenue, Bruma.
• To collect, you must bring your receipt, paycode, and a valid ID, either a Zimbabwean national ID or an old passport.
• Parents collecting on behalf of children must bring the child’s birth certificate plus their own ID.
• If you already have a valid passport, you must bring it for cancellation (at a ZAR 200 fee) before you receive the new one.
• If someone else is picking up for you, they must bring either a police affidavit or a consulate collection letter plus all the documents above.

DURATION: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PROCESS A ZIMBABWEAN PASSPORT?
Inside Zimbabwe:
The standard e-passport is supposed to be ready in about 7 working days once you’ve submitted your application and paid all fees, this is the goal set by the government since the biometric system was introduced. People on the ground report that most ordinary passports are indeed ready in about a week or slightly more, though long queues and holidays can extend that.
Outside Zimbabwe (e.g., South Africa):
If you apply at a consulate like in Johannesburg, it can take 4 to 6 weeks for your passport to be produced and returned to the mission for collection. This is because applications still go into Zimbabwe’s central system for processing.
IMPORTANT CONTEXT:
In earlier years, backlogs sometimes meant waits of months for people inside Zimbabwe, but recent updates show the system has become much faster in many offices.
COST: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET A ZIMBABWEAN PASSPORT?
Passport fees are often the hardest thing to understand, especially because amounts can vary slightly by location and exchange rates, but this is the most recent official picture:
- Ordinary e-Passport: US$150
- Emergency Passport: Around US$250
- QR Code/E-Passport add-on: US$20 (extra for biometric features)
- Application handling fees: may be charged separately at consulates outside Zimbabwe by the mission handling charge (e.g., administrative fees).
So, in total, most applicants pay US$170 for a full, biometric e-passport, and more if they want faster service.
And yes, Zimbabwean passport costs are significantly higher than many of our Southern African neighbours, a point of frequent debate among diaspora communities about affordability.
