Harare Mayor Advocate Jacob Mafume says Harare City Council Embarks of First Street Beautification project to restore it to its former glory

Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has announced that the City Council has officially kicked off a project on the beautification of First Street to restore it to its former glory, promising safer, cleaner, and more modern urban spaces for residents and visitors.

The announcement follows a viral social media video showing commuter omnibuses driving along the pedestrian-only street, sparking public concern over safety and urban planning.

Speaking to journalists after touring the area, Mayor Mafume said,

“We need to restore the street to its former glory. It’s high time we bring back the street to being the smartest street in Harare, with modern technology equipment being part of the expected developments.”

First Street Beautification Project Details

Harare City Council said the First Street beautification project will involve replacing pavements and tar, upgrading street lighting, and installing state-of-the-art cameras to enhance safety and security. The Mayor  emphasised engagement with local stakeholders, including building owners and informal sector traders, to ensure the area supports both business and public life. Highlighting the council’s commitment to inclusive urban development, advocate Mafume said:

“We are also going to engage with informal sectors and improve the area so that they work in a better environment.

The Mayor condemned commuter omnibus drivers who endanger lives by ignoring pedestrian rules, vowing that council will strictly enforce traffic regulations to prevent further incidents.

Council and City Parking have been given the green light to commence works immediately, with Mayor Mafume promising visible progress in the coming months.
