Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has renewed pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa to shut down the Israeli Embassy in South Africa, escalating an already strained diplomatic relationship between Pretoria and Tel Aviv.

Speaking during the debate on Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Cape Town, Malema argued that Parliament had already resolved to downgrade ties with Israel and that government must now act decisively.

Referencing South Africa’s strong criticism of Israel’s conduct in the Palestinian territories. Malema said:

“We call on you to exhibit your courage by closing the Israeli Embassy… Close their embassy and cut relations with this genocidal nation,”

Relations between South Africa and Israel have been tense for years, but they deteriorated sharply after Pretoria recalled its ambassador and later took Israel to the International Court of Justice, accusing it of breaching international law in Gaza. Israel has rejected the allegations.

Malema also criticised what he described as foreign interference in South Africa’s policy direction, warning against external pressure influencing Pretoria’s diplomatic posture.

The call raises complex diplomatic and economic questions. Israel maintains trade, agricultural and technological links with South Africa, while South Africa positions itself as a vocal advocate for Palestinian statehood and international humanitarian law.

Government has not yet confirmed whether it will move beyond downgrading relations to a full embassy closure.
